Expanding on the Earth Art tradition begun by Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty, Walter De Maria’s Lightning Field, Martin Kippenberger’s Last Stop West and his other conceptual subway stations (as well as his Museum of Modern Art, Syros), Justin Kidd intends to loop the planet by traveling around the world, endowing and connecting cities with small site specific installations. This exhibition at the offices of MKG Art Management on Gallery Row marks the launching point of this global project. The Secret Life of Plants also signals Justin Kidd’s first solo exhibition in Houston upon graduating this spring from the University of Houston with an MFA degree in Painting. His work has been included recently in exhibitions at the following art spaces: Eugene Binder Gallery, L.I.C., New York; DiverseWorks, Houston; Commerce Street Artists Warehouse, Houston; Poissant Gallery, Houston; Lawndale Art Center, Houston; Arlington Museum of Art, Arlington, Texas; Semmes Gallery, San Antonio; and, 500X, Dallas.
By collecting materials from the urban environment and rearranging them in public spaces, he proposes to create a completely social sculpture, global in scale, and visible at every intersection. Many of the materials used are biodegradable, or otherwise naturally existing in their local (urban or rural) landscapes.
A website has been established at www.wobblingplanet.net to archive documents relating to the project and to house a travelogue / journal element. This website will be launched at the exhibition opening reception.
Brochures and catalogues are available in conjunction with the exhibition.
The Secret Life of Plants is an exhibition underwritten and hosted by MKG Art Management LLC, a Houston-based art advisory firm. MKG hosts several exhibitions throughout the year, inviting guest curators to conceive and implement exhibition projects for its office space. Frequently, the exhibited artists are unaffiliated with Houston galleries, so visitors are often introduced to work not yet showcased on Gallery Row.
